Nutravet issues advice for dog owners as temperatures drop

Nutravet has issued advice for dog owners to help keep their pets safe during the winter months.

Lianne O’Boyle, a registered veterinary nurse at the company, said: “Winter walks are a great way for them to experience the smells and sights of the season, as well as keeping their joints mobile.

“Some dogs, such as smaller breeds and senior pets, are more vulnerable to cold weather and it is important to keep an extra eye on them.”

Nutravet has said that dog owners should take extra care when temperatures drop to 7°C or below.

It has also said that dogs should be kept on leads when the weather is icy or snowy, to prevent falls or injury.

Ms O’Boyle added: “It’s important to remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them.

“In extreme weather and temperatures, consider exercising your dog in the home with some fun games.”

Nutravet has also said that dogs should not be allowed to eat snow, as it could be contaminated with toxic substances such as de-icer or antifreeze.

It has also said that walking on ice and cold surfaces could make your dog’s paws sore, advising owners to check their dog’s paws for ice balls and remove them while out walking.
