Northumberland winter garden among best to see snowdrops

Wallington in Northumberland is said to be a place where visitors can enjoy “swathes of snowdrops” where “special types” are planted during a mass snowdrop planting event.

It comes as Hannah Stephenson from PA news agency curated a list of scenic gardens known for their array of snowdrops to visit over the next few weeks, writing: “If you’re relishing bracing winter walks in the sunshine or enjoying forays into frosted woods, snowdrops should soon be emerging to brighten up the scene.

“Here are some of the snowdrop havens you could be visiting.”

Why is Wallington among best winter gardens for snowdrops?

Hannah explained: “Not only can you enjoy swathes of snowdrops at this National Trust property, but if you visit during half term you can join in the annual mass snowdrop planting event – but make sure you bring your wellies and gloves.

“During the week, another 100,000 snowdrops will be planted, which brings the tally to 900,000 planted since the activity began in 2015.

“The display includes some special types including the Northumbrian ‘Sandersii’ group which has sulphur-yellow markings instead of green, and the multi-petalled ‘Flore Pleno’.”

Someone who previously visited Wallington during winter posted on Tripadvisor: “We had a winter walk here in February as the snowdrops were coming out.

“We were very fortunate to have chosen a cold but bright day. You can follow various trails around the grounds including a substantial riverside walk with opportunities for enjoying a wide variety of birds.

“The formal gardens are also worth seeing so one can spend several hours here aside from going into the house itself. There is a restaurant and small gift shop.”
