The Football Foundation PlayZones, which will be used for a range of sports and physical activities, will be located in Alnwick, Ashington, and West Wylam.
These will replace existing, but worn-out, outdoor multi-use games areas.
A £370,000 grant from the Premier League, The FA, and Government’s Football Foundation, alongside contributions of £77,000 from the council and £46,000 from The Friends of Eastwoods Park, have made these projects a reality.
Mayor of Prudhoe, Angie Scott, also contributed £10,000 to the West Wylam zone along with Prudhoe Town Council.
Each of the new facilities will have all-weather playing surfaces, fencing, and floodlighting.
The PlayZones are designed to accommodate the most popular sports and activities, including football, netball, basketball, and fitness.
Work at Eastwoods Park in West Wylam is scheduled to start on February 17, with construction expected to take around 10 weeks, weather permitting.
Alnwick Town Council and Friends of Eastwood Park will manage their respective PlayZones, while Northumberland County Council will oversee the site at Hirst Park.
Information about each site, including how to book and ways to get involved in their operation, will soon be circulated through organisations in the area.
Northumberland County Council is also in discussions for a second phase, potentially containing eight additional sites, with the application process beginning in June.
Jeff Watson, Northumberland County councillor, and cabinet member for promoting healthy lives, said: “These Football Foundation PlayZones are being developed to help more people of all ages to become active in their own community.
“They are going to be fantastic facilities providing a space for family and friends to meet, to be active and have fun and reap all the mental and physical health benefits that exercise brings.”
Gordon Stewart, local ward councillor, added: “This park had been all but abandoned for many years until 2017 when a plan was put in place for the council and the Prudhoe community to work together and create a great facility for all to use; this is the latest fantastic part of the transformation.”
Russ Greig from Friends of Eastwoods Park said: “We’re delighted that work will begin on the new PlayZone in Eastwoods Park.”
