North Yorkshire Council issues weather warning

North Yorkshire Council’s highways teams are working around the clock to tackle the icy conditions and sub-zero temperatures, which are expected to continue this week.

Gritting crews are treating the roads, and motorists are being urged to drive with extra caution and only make essential journeys.

The council has warned that road surface temperatures could plunge to as low as minus nine degrees in some areas, and sandbags will be deployed in communities at risk of flooding as the snow begins to melt.

Residents should also brace themselves for service changes, including disruption to waste and recycling collections, and the closure of schools and council buildings.

Waste and recycling collections in the Richmond area have been cancelled, with further disruption expected in Harrogate.

The A59 at Kex Gill remains closed following a landslip last week, with the diversion route being gritted.

Councillor Keane Duncan, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for highways and transport, said: “Our gritting crews have been working hard to treat the county’s road network in very hazardous conditions.

“Gritters have been on the road throughout the weekend and are continuing to work through the freezing temperatures that are forecast.

“I would urge residents to be vigilant and take care when travelling over the coming days.

“We are braced for potential flooding as the snow melts.

“We are closely monitoring the situation, with pumps and sandbags ready to be deployed as required.”

The council is working with care workers who are struggling to reach people in their own homes, to ensure the safe delivery of care and support.
