From the coast at Blackhall to Teesdale, the region was still blanketed by snow this week as temperatures as low as -3C endured, making roads impassable and conditions dangerous.
The UK also this week recorded its coldest January night in 15 years.
In Altnaharra, a hamlet in Sutherland, the most northern region of the Highlands, overnight temperatures dropped to minus 14.5C overnight into Friday – the coldest night of the winter so far in the UK.
It was the coldest January overnight temperature since 2010 – which was a month that saw temperatures drop below minus 15C several times at locations across the UK, including minus 22.3C on January 8 in Altnaharra.
But, what will the forecast be this coming week? Here’s what we know so far.
Monday
Monday will likely see highs of 8C – a far cry from minus temperatures from this past week.
The Met Office forecasts: “Cloudy and rather windy. Some rain is likely by afternoon, mainly affecting the Cheviots and Pennines.
“Probably dry with bright spells in most eastern areas. Rain easing overnight. Maximum temperature 8 °C.”
Tuesday to Thursday
Sunnier spells will be on their way later in the week, as Darlington is set to experience highs of 10C.
The Met Office forecasts: “Cloudy across the Pennines with some patchy light rain at times. Brighter in east with sunny or clear spells.
“Temperatures near or rather above normal with a noticeable southwesterly breeze.”
