North East Balamory star celebrates 30-year milestone

Kim Tserkezie, known for her role as Penny Pocket on the CBeebies children’s show, has been in the broadcasting industry for 30 years.

The actor, who was one of the first disabled presenters on British TV, began her career in the 1990s as a regular presenter of BBC’s Disability Today and From The Edge.

She has since presented for BBC Radio 4 and numerous documentaries for BBC World Service, which she also executive produced with her production company, Scattered Pictures.

Taking to social media, Ms Tserkezie said: “Celebrating my 30th year in broadcasting this year.

“Still not fulfilled my ambition of voicing an animation (ahem…anyone?) but some of the work I have done is now on my shiny new website.”

Ms Tserkezie has performed numerous roles for stage and screen, most notably Penny Pocket in four television series and two UK-wide theatre and arena tours of BAFTA award-winning children’s series, Balamory, and her Royal Television Society Award-winning role as Jasmine in Obsession (for the BFI Network).

Other acting credits include Boy Meets Girl (BBC Two), Wolfblood, (CBBC), feature film, Bliss! and Lodger, a BBC Comedy pilot she also co-wrote, as well as numerous theatre roles including at Live Theatre, Newcastle.

As a writer, Ms Tserkezie has received drama and comedy writing commissions from BBC, ITV, Netflix, BBC Film and Channel 4.

Ms Tserkezie revealed last year that alongside her TV and acting work, she is now also a BACP registered Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, offering sessions in Newcastle to adults.

An award-winning actor, writer, and producer, Ms Tserkezie has won many other awards alongside her RTS award, including Broadcast Hot Shot Writer in 2023 and Disability Power 100 (2019 – 2023).

Ms Tserkezie is also set to play leading roles in two feature films and a new TV comedy series currently in development with broadcasters which she is also executive producing.
