Nisa Local Cardenden says shoplifting ‘harms our business’

The Nisa Local in the town’s Station Road has written on Facebook of the “increasing day by day” theft that has taken place in the shop.

Their Facebook post stated: “We regret having to bring up the issue of shoplifting, but unfortunately, it has been increasing day by day and has become unbearable for our local shop.

“This behaviour not only harms our business but also affects the entire community, as it puts a strain on resources and affects the services we can offer.

“We kindly ask for the support of our local community in helping us address this issue and ensure a safer, more sustainable environment for everyone.

As previously reported in the Press, a crime update from Chief Superintendent Derek McEwan said a rise in shoplifting includes people “stealing to survive”.

Cllr Rosemary Liewald commented: “I am aware of the issues that the Nisa staff are experiencing at the moment .

“The issues are complex and yes the stats bare out that shoplifting in Scotland has risen by 25% compared to the previous year.

“We also know that money problems, mental health factors, opportunity coupled with low self-esteem and social and peer influences on top of habitual behaviour are all common factors and each do pertain to small villages like Cardenden and similar.

“However, I must be clear and stress that this does not excuse shoplifting in any way.

“We know that sadly shoplifting isn’t a victimless crime.

“As these new figures show, shoplifting is the main factor behind abuse and threats towards shop workers and we know from members of staff feedback that thieves are becoming bolder and more aggressive.

“The financial costs too are enormous and are ultimately borne by shoppers themselves, in some cases through higher prices on shop shelves.

“The Nisa store in the village is not alone in being targeted.”
