The PSNI has confirmed that a man was hospitalised after climbing to the top of a Christmas tree in Derry and falling.

In a video that has been circulated, the man is seen climbing the tree in Waterloo Place.

He reaches the top and a person filming it shouts ‘get back down, get back down, get back down son’.

The man appears to be attempting to come back down and baubles fall off before the camera captures the man falling from a height onto the ground.

In distressing scenes, the man lies motionless as the man who was filming asks if he’s okay.

An individual can then be heard asking if he needs an ambulance.

The PSNI said: “Police received a report just after 4.45am on Saturday, 4th January, that a male had climbed a Christmas tree in Waterloo Place in the city centre of Derry/Londonderry and had fallen.

“Police and NIAS responded, and the man subsequently attended hospital.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Derry City & Strabane District Council said that it has only recently been made aware of an incident involving a Christmas tree in the city centre and is engaging with all of the relevant agencies to establish the facts.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service has been contacted.
