NHS in Hampshire to hold free training to fill jobs

The NHS Support Worker Skills Bootcamp aims to prepare candidates for NHS support roles in Southampton and surrounding areas.

The course, which runs from January 13 to January 24, is the first of its kind and offers intensive in-person training.

A spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said: “Our NHS support workers play a vital role in the day-to-day care of patients and the smooth running of our services.

“We’re excited to welcome new candidates into these fulfilling roles that make a real difference in our community.”

Despite being core to healthcare services, support worker roles are among the most understaffed positions in the region.

Local NHS trusts aim to address this issue by offering a secure career pathway with opportunities for professional growth.

The chair of the Solent Growth Partnership Business Board, Rachael Randall, said: “This Skills Bootcamp is about more than filling vacancies; it’s about creating a supportive pathway to meaningful careers in the NHS.

“For jobseekers or anyone considering a career change, this programme is an incredible opportunity to contribute to your community, gain valuable qualifications, and make a difference.”

The bootcamp provides Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications through expert-led sessions.

Upon completion, candidates will be guaranteed interviews with NHS trusts.

The NHS is looking for candidates who are naturally caring and empathetic, hard-working, resilient, flexible and committed to delivering exceptional patient care.

Support worker roles offer clear progression pathways, with potential to specialise in patient care, advisory positions or facilities management.

Participants can also benefit from NHS employment perks, including pension schemes and the satisfaction of contributing to a healthier community.

This pilot skills bootcamp is a collaborative effort between the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, and Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

If successful, the programme will be expanded across the Solent region, providing more residents the chance to pursue meaningful careers in healthcare.
