New 3G pitch plans submitted for Wrexham secondary school

A new 3G football pitch could soon be installed at a Wrexham secondary school.

An application has been submitted by Sports Labs Ltd, on behalf of Wrexham Council, for the development at Ysgol Bryn Alyn, in Gwersyllt.

As part of the plans it has been proposed that the existing, natural grass playing field is replaced with a new synthetic football pitch, complete with fencing and floodlighting.

The works have been put forward as part of the Multi-Sport Grassroots Facilities Programme, which is investing £123 million in 2024/25 to support facilities across the whole of the UK.

According to an application submitted to the local authority, the programme provides funding ‘to make essential facility improvements, so that communities have high-quality pitches to play on, building on investment from previous years.’

Additional equipment will also be provided as part of the planned redevelopment, including one set of full-size goals and three sets of seven-a-side goals for cross-field play.

15m LED floodlights would also be installed on the pitch.

If the plans are approved, the new 3G facility would be available for students and the wider community.

Proposed opening hours are 9am to 10pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 8pm on weekends.

The applicants state: “The client is looking redevelop the existing natural grass playing field and construct a new 3G synthetic football pitch consisting of the playing surface surrounded by perimeter fencing enhanced by a floodlighting system, and other notable minor works.

“This is to provide an exciting and enticing all-weather facility for football and multi-sport use for the local community.

“This proposed redevelopment is intended to encourage more physical activity, primarily through football but extending to other sports and casual play.

“The proposed new 3G pitch construction, enhanced by a new LED floodlighting system will facilitate enhanced use for the local community, presenting a much-improved playing facility which will be beneficial to the wider and local community, with a new upgraded playing surface for the community to use during match days and training.

“It will offer increased opportunities for sport to be played during times of year when bad weather would deem the natural grass surface unplayable or dangerous to the player.

“The new facility will also facilitate use during evenings and weekends, providing a high-quality space to the wider community by the inclusion of floodlighting.

“There are an insufficient number of similar facilities within the local area, and this development would provide a space for the community to engage in sport year-round.”

They add: “The proposed development will deliver a facility of greater community benefit than that of the existing playing field.

“The existing natural grass pitch is currently able to host a limited amount of usage at any given time due to the low durability of natural grass pitches.

“The new 3G synthetic pitch will be available for a greater number of use cases, with this further enhanced by the inclusion of a new LED floodlighting system to ensure its availability throughout the autumn and winter months as daylight hours become limited.”

The application will be considered for approval by Wrexham Council at a later date.
