Nethergate Brewery and Distillery in Long Melford, near Sudbury, submits plans for major expansion to its recently purchased eight-acre site at Rodbridge Corner

A Suffolk brewery has submitted plans for a major expansion which includes the transformation of its visitor centre, shop and taproom after purchasing nearby land earlier this year.

Nethergate Brewery and Distillery submitted the plans to Babergh District Council earlier this month, focusing on the development of its recently purchased eight-acre site in Long Melford.

The land acquisition at Rodbridge Corner will enable the company to tackle practical challenges, such as providing additional parking for visitors to both the brewery and the neighbouring country park.

Subject to approval, Nethergate intends to create extra production space to increase its output as well as improve its bar, shop and visitor centre.

The plans also include a new café, a children’s play area and environmentally friendly initiatives, such as an electric car charging station and a ground source heat pump.

Rob Crawford, general manager of Nethergate, said the plans were a new exciting chapter for the firm.

He said: “We’re committed to growing our business in a way that benefits our community and visitors.

“These plans not only address practical needs, such as parking and production space, but also present an opportunity to create something special that enhances the village’s charm and attraction.”

A consultation is set to take place on January 9.
