National restauranter in talks to open at Ormesby shops

Last month, new Manjaros signs were erected at Sunnyfield Parade, in Ormesby, confirming that the African and Caribbean restaurant chain would be opening a new venue.

The parade, located next to Ormesby Library, has been built on the land of the former Sun Centre tanning shop, which has already re-opened elsewhere on the site, and the old scout hut.

Now, developer Kelt Properties has confirmed that Greggs, One Stop, and an unknown national restaurant chain will be opening up new locations there.

The national operator has not yet been confirmed – although managing director Kevin Conway confirmed that it is interested in the unit with the promise of an extra 30 new jobs.

He told The Northern Echo: “To provide this we’re hoping to reopen negotiations with Redcar and Cleveland Council.

“If successful we should not only have an additional national restaurant chain but also additional parking and a more efficiently proportioned community hub in place of the current Ormesby Library building.”

Opening dates for the new venues are not yet known.

Located just off Sunnyfield Road, the new Manjaros restaurant will mark the firm’s 10th opening, having first launched in Middlesbrough in 2012.

Meanwhile, Greggs and One Stop both already boast a large number of sites across Teesside and the North East.

Plans were first lodged with the council to demolish the old scout centre and tanning shop and replace it with two single storey buildings for six retail units in November 2021.

These proposals were approved in March 2022.

The nearby library has also been refurbished, having first opened in the 1960s. It reopened its doors in January 2023, following several months of work.
