Stroud MP Dr Simon Opher has issued an update on Tricorn House.
The much-maligned former Government Department of Health and Social Security building was built in the early 1970’s and has been empty since 1996.
The site has recently been revamped by developers Viladnik Holdings Ltd. The building now includes 44 flats, 34 parking spaces.

In a post on Facebook, Mr Opher said: “I am in contact with the Home Office and Stroud District Council, and my understanding is that while the building is ready for use, there have been no final decisions about its ongoing use. I also understand that the building has been subject to theft and vandalism, and that there is now a security presence on site.
“Stroud District Council and local partners are pushing to finalise an agreement with a social landlord for Tricorn House to provide much needed accommodation for local homeless families and individuals.
“I understand that the owners are aware and supportive of these discussions but the ultimate decision over the use of the building remains with them.”
In June of last year, former Stroud MP Ms Siobhan Baillie expressed concern after she was told by the Home Office the owners had expressed an interest in housing asylum seekers. She told the immigration minister of her opposition to use the building for asylum seekers
She said: “The owners made an initial expression of interest a little while ago to see if the property could be used for asylum seeker accommodation. There has been no decision on that or progress as far as I am aware. But I have made it absolutely clear to ministers, civil servants, councils and anyone who will listen that I do not think Tricorn is appropriate. I want to see it used as housing options for local people.
“It may be the owners are just making enquiries to see what their options are but I am pretty clear on this and I know local people have strong feelings too.”
