Moray Chamber of Commerce working to keep businesses in Elgin after St Giles Centre closure

Keeping businesses in Moray is the aim for the area’s business group after the closure of Elgin’s St Giles Centre.

It was announced on Wednesday that the town centre shopping centre, opened in 1991, would be closing its doors on January 20.

Sarah Medcraf (inset) and Moray Chamber of Commerce are primed to support businesses affected by the closure of the St Giles Centre.

The centre is currently home to Argos, Ashers Bakery, EE, Ramsdens, Subway, Vodafone, Waterstones and WHSmith.

Gordon and MacPhail have a temporary premises in the centre and Moray School Bank use a unit for their charitable work.

Sarah Medcraf, Moray Chamber of Commerce’s chief executive, said her thoughts are with employees as she aims to keep businesses in the town.

“It’s really sad to hear about the closure,” she said. “I feel for all of the employees. It’s always difficult, but especially so in January.

“We need to look at solutions. We want to keep businesses in Elgin – we don’t want to lose any businesses.”

Moray Chamber has already reached out to Moray Council to ask for support with this.

The business group then aims to connect landlords of vacant properties with the businesses who are set to have to vacate St Giles Centre.

“If any business is needing support then they should reach out to me,” Ms Medcraf added.

Anyone looking to connect with the Chamber can do so by emailing info@moraychamber.co.uk
