Further details on an ‘unexploded shell’ that closed an Ipswich bridge yesterday have been revealed.
Suffolk Police taped off a 100m radius around Bourne Bridge shortly after 3.30pm.
An army explosive ordnance disposal team was called in and they made the device safe.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: “I can confirm an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called out to Wherstead Road at the request of Suffolk Police.”
The team called out to the incident was the 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Search Regiment.
Upon arrival, they discovered an 18 pounder armour-piercing round, before taking it to a safe distance and disposing of it.
The closure came as traffic began piling ahead of Ipswich Town’s fixture against Chelsea at Portman Road – with Ipswich taking a 2-0 victory.
The road reopened by 4.30pm.
