Mid and South Essex NHS Trust reflect on 2024 achievements

From milestone retirements to award-winning teams, and from trailblazing television debuts to inspiring community fundraising, the Trust has much to celebrate as the year comes to a close.

One of the standout moments of 2024 was the retirement of Margaret Price, a 90-year-old Domestic Assistant at Southend Hospital, who dedicated 33 years to keeping the hospital clean and welcoming.

Her unwavering commitment since 1991 inspired her colleagues and showcased the importance of every role in patient care.

Meanwhile, the Blossom Team at Broomfield Hospital’s maternity department shone brightly, winning Bereavement Team of the Year at the Mariposa Awards in April.

Their compassionate approach also earned individual accolades in the Compassionate and Community Award categories, underscoring their commitment to providing comfort and support during difficult times.

The Trust’s annual Shine Awards in September also recognized the best of its staff, with 608 nominations across eight categories celebrating excellence in healthcare.

In November, newly qualified and student midwives from Basildon Hospital stepped into the national spotlight with The Young Midwives of Essex, an eight-part hybrid documentary series.

The show, aired on UKTV’s streaming service U, gave viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of midwives as they balanced demanding training, exams, and personal lives.

The Trust also saw heartwarming acts of generosity and bravery across 2024.

Roger Alexander from Benfleet faced his fear of heights in May, abseiling down the 154-foot tower at Southend Hospital to raise funds for the cancer unit.

His effort was a touching tribute to the excellent care his wife received, inspiring others to support the hospital.

Charity shops across Southend, Leigh, Westcliff, and Hadleigh also made significant contributions, raising £100,000 for the Spotlight Radiotherapy Appeal in June.

By December, the campaign had amassed £545,000, supporting crucial advancements in cancer treatment.

As 2024 closes, the Mid and South Essex NHS Trust can reflect on a year of achievements, teamwork, and community support.

Despite the pressures faced by healthcare services nationwide, the Trust’s staff and supporters have demonstrated unwavering dedication to providing exceptional care.
