Met Office: Snow and ice hit the North East overnight

Snow and ice hit the North East overnight:

As snow continues to blanket the area, rural communities are among the hardest hit, with reports of treacherous road conditions and some residents becoming isolated.

Snow depths of up to 40cm are expected in higher altitudes above 300 meters, particularly in areas such as the Pennines and parts of Northumberland.

Transport networks are struggling to cope with the challenging conditions.

The A1 has seen delays and closures in some stretches due to ice and snow accumulation, while other rural roads remain impassable.

Public transport services, including buses and trains, have also been affected, with cancellations and delays reported on several key routes.

Travellers are urged to check for updates before setting out.

The Met Office’s yellow warning for snow and ice and amber for snow remains in effect for much of the North East, advising residents to take extra precautions while travelling or venturing outdoors.

As the region braces for further cold weather in the days ahead, emergency services and community groups are urging residents to look out for vulnerable neighbours and ensure they have access to essential supplies.
