The warning covers the entire region, and is expected to last from midnight into Sunday, January 5, until midday on Monday, January 6.
The greatest risk is in southern and eastern Scotland, where 2-5cm may fall in various places and potentially 10-20cm over high ground.
Rain or sleet is more likely near some northern and eastern coasts
The Met Office has provided several advice points to members of the public.
- There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
- There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off
- There is a chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel
Whilst not all areas may be affected, outbreaks of snow will likely develop during Sunday and Sunday night, potentially giving some significant accumulations in places.
To cope with driving in the heavy snow, it is necessary to plan your route, check for delays and road closures, amending your travel plans if necessary; and leaving more time to prepare and check your car before setting off.
Drivers should also make sure they have essentials packed in the car in the event of any delays such as warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, and an ice scraper.
