Met Office issues new weather warning for snow in Fife

Covering a large area across Scotland and England, it’s in place from 9am on Wednesday until 3am on Thursday and the advise is that the wintry conditions “may bring disruption” and will have a “medium impact”.

Up to 10 centimetres of snow could fall in towns and cities with up to 25cm expected on the hills, with snow and ice and plummeting temperatures expected to make road conditions difficult and travel delays likely.

It adds up to four days of weather warnings ahead for Fife as the Met Office had previously issued a yellow ‘be aware’ warning for heavy rain tomorrow (Monday) and Hogmanay (Tuesday).

Today the Met Office said: “Heavy and persistent snow may bring disruption on Wednesday and Wednesday night.

“There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.

“There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off.

“There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.”

The weather warning covers a swathe of Scotland and England and the forecaster added: “A band of rain in association with a deep low pressure system moving in from the west pushes east on Wednesday.

“This is likely to turn to snow as it moves into cold air across the northern half of the UK.

“Two-to-five centimetres and locally nearer 10cm of snow accumulations are possible widely, with 10-15cm and locally 20-25cm over hills with significant drifting due to strong winds.

“People cope better when they have prepared in advance for the risk of power cuts or being cut off from services and amenities due to the snow.

“It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.”
