Met Office issue yellow weather warning for snow in Winchester

The warning is in effect from 5pm today (Monday, January 6) to 10am tomorrow (Tuesday, January 7), with the weather experts warning that icy stretches and snow showers could develop overnight.

The Met Office is warning that the cold weather could cause travel disruption, with roads and railways likely to be affected by the ice.

The weather warning says: “Icy stretches are expected to develop this evening, due to ongoing wet surfaces following earlier rain and, in places, snowmelt.

“Frequent sleet or snow showers are also expected to affect Wales and parts of northwest England this evening, moving into southwest England, the Midlands and parts of southern England in the early hours of Tuesday.

“In addition to the ice, these are likely to produce snow accumulations of a few cm above 200 metres, with a small chance of greater than 5 cm above 200 metres in Wales. The heaviest snow showers may also produce temporary accumulations of 0-2 cm at low levels.”

The Met Office is advising residents to take care while out and about in the snowy weather, to leave five minutes earlier if travelling, and to stick to main roads that are more likely to have been treated.

Winchester City Council has announced that its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol will remain in place for the duration of the weather warning.

In a post on Facebook, the council said: “As the temperature drops, we’re increasing our support in place to ensure no one needs to sleep out on the street during the cold weather.
