Ice will continue to pose dangers for motorists and pedestrians this evening, the Met Office has warned after issuing a new yellow warning for the region.
Motorists and walkers awoke to treacherous conditions in many parts of Moray and the Highlands on Friday, with sheet ice leading to dangerous conditions in numerous communities.
And the Met Office has warned that there will be no immediate respite after issuing a new alert for ice for Friday night into Saturday morning.
The new warning comes into force at 4pm, and will remain in place until 10am tomorrow.
The alert covers all of the Highlands, Moray and Aberdeenshire as part of a wider warning for all of Scotland..
“Temperatures will again fall widely below freezing during Friday evening,” said a Met Office spokesperson. “This will allow ice to readily form on untreated surfaces, particularly where roads and pavements remain wet from wintry showers.
“Scattered showers will fall as a mixture of rain, sleet and snow. Most areas are unlikely to see any fresh accumulations of snow though a slight covering is possible in places, especially over parts of northern Scotland.”
The fresh warning is one of several in place for coming days, with a snow warning already issued for all of Sunday and the first half of Monday across many parts of the region.
And forecasters have warned that the cold spell is likely to continue well into next week, so further warnings may yet be issued.
