Maybole to take part in Beat the Street interactive game

The Beat the Street active travel game will see residents win prizes for walking, cycling, and wheeling.

The initiative, created by GP Dr William Bird MBE, aims to make exercise fun and encourage people to explore their local areas.

The game has been played by more than 1.8 million people in 168 UK locations, including 22 in Scotland.

It took place in spring 2024 across Symington, Troon, Dundonald, Monkton, Prestwick, Ayr, Tarbolton, Mossblown, and Coylton in South Ayrshire, where 12,001 people signed up and clocked up 113,277 miles over six weeks.

The game is open to children and adults of any age and will take place for four weeks from Wednesday, February 12 to Wednesday, March 12.

Children will use a card and map provided by participating primary schools, while adults can pick up a free card from distribution points listed on the Beat the Street Carrick website.

Alternatively, players over the age of 13 can download the free Beat the Street app to play the game with their phone.

Players can join a school, community, or workplace team, with prizes for the teams that travel the furthest.

Councillor Bob Pollock, depute leader of South Ayrshire Council, said: “We have seen the impact of Beat the Street on other local communities, and we are delighted to bring the initiative to Carrick.

“The competitive element really encourages people of all ages to get out there and enjoy the beautiful parks and open spaces around the area.

“As well as getting people out of cars and into the great outdoors, there are also prizes to be won the further you travel.”
