Manydown: Work starts to build junctions for development

Overnight work to build access junctions on Roman Way and Roman Road in Winklebury will commence on January 20.

The construction work is the first step of preparation for the development, which will consist of 3,500 homes.

Residents have raised concerns about construction traffic due to the works, however, the master developer of the Manydown project, Urban and Civic, says it will work to minimize disruption.

It added: “Measures will be in place to minimize the impact on local communities, including manually controlled traffic lights during peak times and wheel washing for vehicles leaving the site.

“Once the junctions are in use, construction traffic is expected to add one additional journey for every 60 existing journeys.

“Clear route directions will be given to construction traffic to avoid local residential roads.”

The announcement for the start of construction work comes after Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council completed a landmark deal to create new communities at Manydown after a 29-year wait.

As previously reported, Manydown was originally bought under a long lease with an option to purchase the freehold by the borough council and Hampshire County Council in 1996.

The two councils agreed to the principal terms of the purchase in October 2023 and the legal and financial documents to complete the purchase were signed by both councils and The Manydown Company Ltd in October 2024.

Planning permission for the temporary construction access junctions was approved by the borough council in April 2023 as a first step in supporting the permissions and access needed to start work on site.

In a leaflet sent to residents, Urban and Civic said: “We are writing to let you know that from 20 January 2025 work will start on the construction access junctions for Manydown.

“These two junctions are the first infrastructure works for Manydown and will allow construction vehicles to access the site to deliver the roads and pavements, community amenities including schools and parks and new homes.”
