Man shaves head to raise £9,000 for Tynedale Hospice at Home

Phil Shaw decided to raise funds for Tynedale Hospice at Home after they supported his wife Lorraine.

Ms Shaw was diagnosed with cancer in the form of an invasive lobular carcinoma, in May 2024.

She is currently undergoing an intensive chemotherapy course, set to finish at the end of January, after which she will have radiotherapy, hormone therapy, and immunotherapy.

She lost her hair during the second round of chemotherapy, one of the many challenges she has faced in the past six months.

Mr Shaw said: “I really wanted to support and ride this journey with Lorraine so decided to have a sponsored head shave, just in time for Christmas.

“All funds raised from my Close Shave event will go to Tynedale Hospice at Home to support their amazing efforts.

“Their work often goes unnoticed but it is essential for us.

“We are absolutely blown away to have raised £9,000 for the Hospice.”

The hospice has been providing support to Lorraine and will continue to do so throughout her treatment.

Melanie Fogg, head of care at Tynedale Hospice at Home, said: “Income received helps us fund our hospice at home care services which include end of life nursing care in the home, pre and post bereavement services, patient transport, and complementary therapy for the local families.

“Receiving a donation of this size is fantastic and we are thankful to have such support.”
