Man attempting to break running marathon with fridge record

Joss Mowforth aka the London Fridge is originally from Scotland but has worked in the army for 10 years.

He now works as an officer at Bulford Camp on Salisbury Plain.

He will run the London Marathon on April 27 while carrying a 25kg fridge on his back – and he wants to break the world record.

Joss Mowforth (Image: Joss Mowforth) The world record for running a marathon with a 25kg regulation fridge currently stands at 3 hours, 53 minutes, and 14 seconds. It is held by a Finnish man who beat the previous record set by a Royal Marine and gained media interest.

Joss said: “I’ve always been a half-decent runner but this challenge is going to be tough as the wind is an issue. It’s like I’ve got a 25kg sale on my back.

“As much as getting a record is fun, the real reason I’m doing it is all in support of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.”

SSAFA is a trusted source of support for serving personnel, veterans, and their families during their time of need. In 2022, SSAFA’s dedicated teams of volunteers and employees helped over 59,000 people.

“They provide tailored support to ensure no one in our Armed Forces community is left behind. From practical assistance to emotional support, SSAFA is there for them every step of the way.”

Joss is confident he can be close to the record and has already run a half marathon at the required pace. He trains around the Salisbury plains and in the Bulford and Tidworth areas.

Joss said: “As I train out and about, I get some interesting reactions from people. Lots of people get their phones out and start filming, some just keep their heads down and pretend to ignore me and others stop and have a lovely chat.

“If anyone sees me running out and about please feel free to stop me and have a chat.”

Now you may be wondering where you would get a fridge for something like this. Well for Joss, working in the army seemed to pay off.

“Someone in the army was simply getting rid of a fridge, so I snapped it up. It was still working as well, which is one of the requirements of the record.”

Joss is documenting his journey on Instagram under the handle @the_london_fridge and is gaining some followership.
