  • If someone dies without leaving a valid or effective will, certain individuals are entitled to the estate in an order of priority.

This order is as follows: husband, wife or civil partner, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, mother or father, brothers or sisters or their children, half-brothers or sisters or their children, grandparents, uncles and aunts or their children, and half-uncles and aunts or their children.

For example, if you are a first cousin of the deceased, you would only be entitled to share in the estate if there are no relatives above you in the order of entitlement, such as a niece or nephew.

The government website regularly updates this list, providing opportunities for potential heirs to claim these unclaimed estates.

It is crucial for individuals who suspect they might have a claim to these estates to thoroughly check the list and assert their rights accordingly.
