Linfield invite supporters for ‘reflection and remembrance’ of former player Michael Newberry to coincide with Cliftonville footballer’s funeral

The English defender – who most recently played for Cliftonville following a spell at Linfield – passed away suddenly on December 30, on what was his 27th birthday.

Widespread tributes across the football fraternity have been paid to the former Northern Ireland Under 19’s international since his death.

Linfield have now confirmed supports are invited to pay their own tribute to the man from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, whose funeral will take place in his hometown.

“This Thursday, Windsor Park will be a place of reflection and remembrance as the club pays tribute to former player Michael Newberry, who tragically passed away in December,” the club said.

“Michael, a cherished member of our football family, will be laid to rest on the same day.

“In honour of his contributions to the club and the community, we invite supporters to join us in celebrating his life.

“As a mark of respect, the club has designated the home dugout at Windsor Park as a space for fans to leave flowers and personal tributes to Michael.

“Supporters are welcome to visit between 10am and 5pm to pay their respects. This gesture reflects Michael’s profound friendships within the team and his endearing connection to the club.

“Supporters can enter the stadium through the Players’ Entrance at the back of the South Stand and will be shown where to go by security staff.

“Michael’s warmth and humility endeared him to teammates and fans alike. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the countless memories he leaves behind.

“Thursday will be a poignant day for all connected with Windsor Park and the wider Irish League football family as we remember Michael’s life.”

Michael began his career in the youth academy of his hometown club, Newcastle United, at age 11, and earned his first international cap for the Northern Ireland U19 team in 2014 before moving to Iceland to play with Víkingur.

In 2021, he signed for Linfield, and most recently, he joined Cliftonville in the summer, making 25 appearances for the Reds.

Speaking to this newspaper last week, his older brother described his sibling as “our superstar who really was living the dream”.

“The support since we received the news has been unprecedented. So many people have been in contact to say how much he meant to them. He is so loved, our superstar,” brother Adrian said.

“So many people came out to support us. We are broken but I am determined that his memory will live on through me. He was my little brother, and I was so proud of him.”
