I sympathise because I hear from friends who live outside the town centre that it is often impossible to find a space to park, and I gladly offer them a space in my little drive when I can. A few years ago when it was on the cards that the River Park Leisure Centre would be moving from their present site, I suggested to the council that some space might be set aside behind North Walls for a pretty landscaped car park for shoppers wanting to make a quick visit to the town centre but who did not want to spend time using the Park and Ride. This way, cars would be parked out of sight of the historic city centre but within easy walking distance of the High Street.
Judging by the queues to get to the Christmas Market in The Cathedral Close last month, it seems that at this time of year at least, people, as well as cars, are clogging up our ancient streets and it is difficult to think of a sensible solution to promoting but protecting our heritage at the same time. I think Venice has the same problem!
