Laughern Brook flooding: new housing to blame asks Udall

Heavy rain caused flooding at the junction of Broadway Grove and Bromyard Road in St John’s in Worcester on Monday following a yellow Met Office weather warning.

Several flooding warnings remain in force today (Tuesday) on sections of the River Severn, River Avon and River Teme. The flooding has affected parts of Worcester including Pitchcroft and Diglis, Upton, Hanley Castle, Kempsey, Callow End, Evesham, Eckington and Strensham.

The Worcester News published photos showing the Broadway Grove junction underwater and the car park at Hooked fish and chips deluged by murky brown flood water, leaving several cars marooned.

Cllr Richard Udall, who represents St John’s on both the city and county council, has expressed concern about intensifying flooding at the key city junction.

Meanwhile, one resident said the flood water had not subsided as quickly as might be expected.

“Although the level on the brook has dropped there is still substantial water across the road where the Audi car is.

“This is due to the drains in the dip by the junction being blocked and in need of cleaning as this happens every time there is heavy rain,” he said.

Cllr Udall said: “Flooding problems at the junction of Broadway Grove and Bromyard Road have always been a concern.

“However, recently the issues have intensified and become much more frequent.

“I have requested a full drainage survey to take place, to see if the gullies are blocked or damaged.

“The whole area needs to be inspected and a solution found.  It may mean new works to provide new drainage.

“However, I’m concerned that this will also create more run off into the Laugherne Brook which will add to pollution and could damage wildlife.

“The water came very close to houses and businesses, so I’m also asking for sandbags to be issued to ensure property is protected in the future.

“A number of drivers ignored the floods and continued to drive through the water, this caused a wave which could have damaged property and added to the pollution issues, so this also needs to be considered.

“The Meco Alley was also closed by flooding, which ensured problems for many more residents, who could not safely walk home. The speed of the flood, how fast the water came up and went down, was very worrying, this may have been caused by developments up stream of the junction.

“It’s something I will want to discuss with the Environment Agency, to ensure they are in control of the situation and have proposals to prevent a serious run off of water up stream causing problems for residents at this location”.
