James Devine sentenced over sex videos sent to ’14-year-old girl’

James Devine, 42, had been sending sexual videos to someone he believed to be a 14-year-old schoolgirl.

In fact, he was snared by a decoy online profile, and he has now appeared for sentencing at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He previously admitted that between February 17, and April 8, at Westfield Terrace, Bowhill and elsewhere he sent sexual messages to someone he believed to be a young girl.

He sent indecent, sexualised and suggestive messages, attempting to cause a child to view a sexual image and to communicate indecently with them.

The messages included photographs and videos of him masturbating.

Devine has now moved out of Fife and is living at Blairgrove Court, Coatbridge.

Depute fiscal Annie Henderson said the fake profile had been set up on Facebook by Yorkshire Paedophile Hunters in the name of Becki-Rose Machan, pretending she was a 14-year-old girl.

Devine started sending the profile messages, telling her, “You’re gorgeous” and saying she looked older than 14.

He later started asking the girl about what underwear she had on and telling her he would perform sex acts on her when she was 16.

The messages became more and more explicit, telling her she was not too young for sex and that she should not tell her mum about their online conversations.

He then started sending videos of him naked and masturbating.

When the Yorkshire group found out Devine was going to be running a children’s football class at Bowhill Community Centre they asked a Scottish paedophile hunter group to intervene.

Devine was confronted at the football session with the whole incident filmed and put online, ending with him being arrested and put in a police van.

Defence solicitor Elaine Buist said her client has worked for various amateur football clubs across Scotland.

“At the time, he was using his computer as a fantasy world to escape from the pressures of his own life,” she added.

Sheriff Susan Duff commented that there seemed to be a lot of minimising of the offences by Devine in the social work report.

Ms Buist responded: “I think it’s that he’s actually embarrassed by the whole thing and finds it difficult to talk about it.

“He’s now moved out of the area and is feeling socially isolated where he is.”

Sheriff Duff imposed a community payback order with a year’s supervision and 200 hours of unpaid work.

Devine was also put on the sex offenders register for five years.

Devine, originally from Glasgow, was a coach with the John Thomson Football Academy in Cardenden.
