Inverness NHS Highland sessions open up the world of wellbeing technology

By Shona Aldridge

Technology can make life easier in a number of areas including for those who need assistance.

Technology is woven into nearly every aspect of our daily lives.

From making leisure time more enjoyable with televisions, to speeding up household chores with washing machines, to helping us stay connected with mobile phones, it’s hard to imagine life without it.

For many, technology is more than a convenience – it’s a lifeline.

This is particularly true for people who need support to live independently and safely.

Gadgets and tools can remind someone to take their medication, notify carers if a person has a fall, or alert family members if someone wandered outside when it might not be safe, and much more.

These technologies not only enable safer, more independent living, but also provide peace of mind to carers who worry about loved ones, especially when they’re not nearby.

What’s more, there’s a growing range of technology designed for people who struggle to use modern devices like tablets or smartphones.

Shona Aldridge.

Did you know that smart speakers, like Alexa, can make staying connected or managing daily tasks much simpler?

These devices can play music, set reminders, make video calls, read eBooks, control lights, open curtains, and more – all through simple voice commands.

Take Jo, for example.

Jo is living with dementia and her family has equipped her home with technology.

They’ve set up reminders to help her remember when it’s time to eat or prepare meals, and they use video calling to check in regularly to ensure she’s OK.

Tools like these empower Jo to maintain her independence while giving her family peace of mind.

The challenge for many people is knowing where to start or which technologies might be most useful for their needs.

That’s why we’ve launched Wellbeing Tech Thursday with High Life Highland.

On the last Thursday of every month, you’ll find us at Inverness Library from 10am to noon.

We invite you to drop by, explore a range of technologies, watch demonstrations and ask questions.

Not based near Inverness? Don’t worry!

Next spring, we’ll be hitting the road, travelling across the Highlands with our big bag of tricks.
