Improvements set for Danemore Crossroads after fatal crash

The minor enhancements to the Danemore Crossroads have been announced after almost 1,400 people signed a petition calling for measures to be introduced to improve road safety.

This comes after a woman died and a man was critically injured after a crash between a car and a school coach at the B4208 at Welland, by the Danemore Crossroads, in November.

The bus was on its way to pick up schoolchildren at Hanley Castle High School and the road was closed for several hours in the aftermath of the crash.

The petition was set up by Cllr Tom Wells after another crash at Danemore Crossroads on January 3, this time involving three vehicles.

In the most recent smash, no patients required ambulance assistance and the service was stood down.

However, Cllr Wells, an independent county councillor from Powick, said something needed to be done before there was yet another death.

His petition calls on Worcestershire County Council and West Mercia Police to urgently conduct a full road safety audit and act on all its findings.

He told the Gazette: “It is vital that the police and highways department fully investigate not only the accident before Christmas, but also the more recent serious three vehicle collision just last week resulting in a full road closure.

“The strength of local feeling is demonstrated by the huge number of signatures on the petition.

“Many who signed stated they had personally witnessed routine many bumps and shunts on the crossroads.

“Such accidents are never formally recorded and do not appear on the accident history.

“I would urge the highways department to investigate this in a thorough and methodical manner, I am not sure a few additional signs are necessarily going to address the issue.”

He added commuters and those living nearby were very concerned about the growing number of serious crashes at this ‘accident blackspot’.

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council, said: “A detailed highway investigation has been carried out in conjunction with West Mercia Police.

“We have identified some minor enhancements to the junction, which will be implemented by April 2025.”

The spokesperson added changes had previously been made to the junction to improve visibility.

A spokesperson for the West Mercia Police Road Safety Team added: “We are aware of the road safety concerns at this location and are already working with our local policing team, Malvern Hills District Council and Worcestershire County Council Highways to ensure we are doing all we can to improve road safety in this area.”
