Paul, creator of Horror-on-Sea, is celebrating the festival’s success as it marks its 12th iteration after becoming “one of the biggest” of its kind in the world.
He reflected on the number of horror enthusiasts and aficionados it had brought together, and noted it had served as a proving ground for filmmakers wishing to break into the industry.

Mr Cotgrove called the event “one of the biggest” in the world and plans to push even further still.
“I still remember 13 years ago, I discussed the idea with the hotel and they were very excited. We thought we would see if we can get horror fans down in January, from day one, we were very busy.
“It’s built now into one of the biggest independent horror festivals in the UK, if not the world.
“Some of the filmmakers who have showcased work here have gone on to make bigger budget films for other companies, it certainly has been a springboard for careers.
“We have no intention of calling it a day yet, we will carry on getting bigger and better for the years to come.
“The festival means everything to me, I’ve made so many friends. Seeing the pleasure the festival gives to all, the horror fans, means everything to me. I hope it continues for many years to come.”

He recalled how he had not expected the festival to grow as quickly as it did and had been left delighted with its yearly turnouts.
Between 2,000 and 3,000 lovers of the genre are expected to walk through the doors of the hotel over the course of two weekends, Mr Cotgrove claimed.
He highlighted the work of the Thundersley Superhero Alliance who dress up for the event annually to fundraise for Little Havens hospice in Benfleet, adding they always make it special.
He believes the festival’s location and format have served it well and he has no plans to deviate from this, adding they are not looking to expand to other venues.
The organiser is already working on the 2026 show, and has begun looking at submissions to be featured, and meeting with the hotel to iron out the details of the event.
