Highlands was the coldest place in the UK overnight with temperatures hitting -18.5C – the chilliest January night in 15 years
According to the Met Office, Altnaharra (-18.5), Aviemore (-16), Loch Glascarnoch (-13), and Lairg (-10) all saw the mercury plunge to negative double digits.
Generally, the coldest temperatures were in central Sutherland and Ross-shire and the Cairngorms with typically gentler temperatures on the coast.
Between Inverness and Caithness it ranged from -4 to about -10 with the lower temperatures coming more in southern areas getting warmer towards the north.
At 16.00 Friday Loch Glascarnoch was already –11 while at the same time it was -14 in Altnaharra and by 22.00 Altnaharra hit -18 and Loch Glascarnoch -12.
Meanwhile during the evening temperatures in Aviemore fell rapidly from -7 to -12 eventually hitting -16 overnight while Lairg woke up to a forecast -11 this morning.
While those attending the Strathpuffer – the 17 hour endurance race starting at 10am today – will do so in temperatures of -5 with a high coming this morning.
By the time the race is due to end at around 3am the temperature will have risen to -1 – not much comfort for the hardy participants.
