With thousands of children across the Highlands getting the day off because of the weather today there was plenty of opportunity for some fun in the snow as these pictures from readers show the upside of what for others have been a difficult few days.

More than 5000 children from 52 schools and 39 nurseries are enjoying a day off after Highland Council announced the closure of a raft of schools and nurseries this morning, after more heavy snow overnight to add to that which had already fallen earlier in the week.

While not closed today both Nairn Academy and Charleston Academy in Inverness were expecting pupils to join in the wintry fun, and issued guidance to pupils about the best way to enjoy snowballing.

There is no sign of an imminent end to the weather situation, with a yellow weather warning that had previously been expected to end at noon today now extended until midnight on Thursday, with more snow and sleet expected.
