High Score arcade planned for Crowngate Shopping Centre

High Score calls itself a ‘family entertainment centre’ and charges a flat rate for entry to the venue, which gives visitors an hour to play as many games as they like.

All games are set to ‘free-play’ mode, so you don’t need to put extra cash or tokens into the machine.

Plans for High Score to take over a unit inside the Friary Walk part of Crowngate, near the Broad Street entrance, have been submitted to the city council.

Proposals put forward on behalf of Crowngate owners Starburst UK Ltd describe High Score as a “unique leisure experience”.

“Each venue features over 60 gaming positions and 200 diverse titles, catering to a wide audience, from nostalgic players to first-timers.

“As a family-focused entertainment centre, High Score is designed for all ages, setting them apart from traditional arcades.

“They also provide a variety of options beyond general admission, including birthday parties, SEN-friendly sessions, and exclusive event hires.

“There are no gambling, over 18s machines, or prize games offered by High Score.”

The unit earmarked for the arcade is described as having a “large open plan ground floor” with a smaller basement and first floor.

The proposal would not undermine the retail function of the shopping frontage but instead diversify its use, enhancing the area’s overall appeal.

Plans state: “The proposed amusement arcade would occupy a currently vacant unit, thereby bringing the premises back into active use and contributing to the vitality of the town centre.

“The use as an amusement arcade is consistent with a leisure use and would provide an attractive, safe, and accessible facility, catering to a range of users.

“There are no external alterations to the unit and therefore the proposal would have no impact on the wider conservation area or its setting.”

In a Worcester information pack included in the planning application, High Score founder David Field said: “We are looking forward to bringing this new concept for locals to enjoy and are delighted to be creating new jobs within the area.

“Our vision is to provide a safe and fun experience that grows with the community, creating a positive environment and promoting engagement between families and friends.”
