A headteacher and governor are celebrating 50 years combined service at a primary school in Thatcham.

A special celebration lunch was held to celebrate their joint milestone at Spurcroft Primary School last week.

Nina Hopkinson joined as a governor in 2000. Kate Flowerdew started the same year, eventually becoming the school’s headteacher.

“What’s kept me here for 25 years is the opportunity to take on different challenges and continue making a positive impact,” said Mrs Hopkinson.

Her interest in school governance began after she completed a Master’s degree in Education at Southampton University.

“I’ve taken on almost every role a governor can have, from focusing on English to serving as chair for four years and now overseeing safeguarding,” she continued. “The variety of responsibilities has been incredibly rewarding and keeps you learning.

“When I was chair, our goal was to secure a good Ofsted inspection, and achieving that was fantastic.”

And reflected on her milestone, Mrs Flowerdew also commented: “Although a lot has changed since I joined Spurcroft, the school has retained its friendly, family-oriented atmosphere even as it has grown.

“Our focus remains on delivering the highest-quality education for our pupils.”

The school is currently inviting new members to join its governing board.

Mrs Hopkinson added: “Being a governor offers a unique perspective on how schools are run.

“I’d urge anyone to give it a try. You don’t have to stay for 25 years, but it might just become as fulfilling as it has been for me.”
