Hayley Rowlands, of Aldringham, near Leiston, appears on The Great Pottery Throw Down

A Suffolk woman has stepped into the spotlight on a popular Channel 4 TV show.

Hayley Rowlands, 55, of Aldringham cum Thorpe, near Leiston, showcased her bright and bold designs last night on the first episode of the new series of The Great Pottery Throw Down.

During the episode, the potters were challenged to create a salad set inspired by a memorable holiday and Hayley chose to base her creation on her trip to Sri Lanka with her husband, Adam.

Hayley, who has worked as social worker for 30 years, hoped her piece would make ‘quite a statement’ with its vibrant yellow design and sgraffito peacock feathers.

For the show’s second challenge, contestants were asked to create sangria jugs following a demonstration from judge Keith Brymer Jones.

Hayley came eighth in this challenge and only one of her jugs was thrown in the bucket and destroyed by Keith.

Her final design was met with a mixed verdict from the judges as though they liked her design, they thought her paintwork was a bit messy and her oil dispenser was too heavy.

However, as it was the first week and all the potters performed well, it was decided that no one would be eliminated from the competition and all contests would progress to next week.

“I’m just so pleased,” Hayley said. “It’s so lovely to be with everyone going into next week.”

The Great Pottery Throw Down is aired every Sunday evening on Channel 4 and will run until March 9.
