Haughton Road, in Darlington, flooded after snowy weather

Haughton Road, near the Brownlow Cars dealership, has been flooded with water, with drivers having to brave the large pool today (January 6).

Footage taken from the road shows that the road is currently passable – with several vehicles managing to get through by driving slowly.

An amber flood alert is currently in place for the River Skerne, with rising river levels this morning causing the potential for flooding until 7pm this evening.

Areas most at risk include riverside footpaths and low lying land and roads near Preston-Le-Skerne – although weather conditions are expected to improve this afternoon and no further flooding is expected.

The flooding follows a weekend of icy cold weather across the North East, with snow blanketing the region causing travel chaos across road and rail.

The Government has today also issued an amber health alert for the next six days, warning of an increase in death and demand on the NHS.

The alert warns of excess deaths, staffing issues and more due to plunging temperatures, with The Met Office predicting temperatures plunging as low as -3C later this week.
