Harry Potter merchandise shop to open in former sweet shop

Hardy’s Sweet Shop, on High Street, closed its doors in June, with a notice placed on its door saying ‘permanently closed’. The shop was formerly known as Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe and was located on Blue Boar Row.

The ‘closed’ sign was later replaced by a note that read: “To our dear customers. Thank you all very much for your support and friendship over the years…

“It has been a pleasure getting to know so many of you and watching your families grow, either as Mr Simms/Hardy’s. We have enjoyed being part of the local community… thank you, we wish you all the best!”

Until now, it was unknown what would move into the unit.

In October, a planning application was submitted for a change of use of part of the ground floor – from retail to residential. The applicant also wished to make alterations to the mezzanine floor to provide staff facilities to the shop, and carry out surfacing of ceiling to basement under residential area with fire retardant material.

Wiltshire Council has approved the plans. To view them in full, click here.

As of December, ‘House of Wonders’ has appeared to take over the shop, which now has a black exterior and new signage at the front. It is unknown when the shop will open and House of Wonders has been contacted for more information.

The brand has two other branches, in Oxford and London, selling gifts, souvenirs and clothing under Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and Game of Thrones branding.

On its website, House of Wonders in London said: “At House of Wonders London, we’re not just shopkeepers; we’re dedicated fans who have poured our love for all things magical into every corner of this enchanting emporium.

“Our journey began with a simple desire: to create a place where fellow Potterheads could immerse themselves in the Harry Potter universe’s wonder, mystery, and pure magic.”

It describes the shop as a “treasure trove” of officially licensed Harry Potter merchandise.
