Hampshire County Council releases tips to survive cold snap

The county council released advice on “staying warm and well” this winter as an amber cold health alert has been issued for Hampshire by the UK Health Security Agency.

County council Director for Public Health Simon Bryant said: “One is about keeping moving […] just your fingers and toes and just kind of wriggle around a little bit.

“Think about the layers you’re wearing – whether you can put a base layer on. And then, also, which rooms in the house you heat.

“If you’re worried about heating costs, keep one room warm so you can stay warm in that room.”

The county council said: “While most of us can cope with the colder weather, some people are more vulnerable to the drop in temperatures as it can make some health conditions worse.

“Those particularly at risk from the ill effects of cold weather include babies and very young children (under five years), older people, people who live alone and may be unable to care for themselves, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

“People at risk of falls, people with learning disabilities, pregnant women and those on a low income are also more at risk.”

It continued: “Look out for friends, family and neighbours who may be vulnerable by keeping in touch, checking they are well, making sure they know how to keep warm and safe, and whether they need practical help such as stocking up with food or essential medications.

“If you are worried about your health or that of somebody you know, ring NHS 111.”

The council also said, for practical tips on staying well, go to NHS advice at https://www.nhs.uk/…/seasonal-health/keep-warm-keep-well

People should also note HCC’s libraries are designated Warm Welcome Spaces.

Winchester City Council has activated its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) and it will remain in place while the temperature drops.

The city council said: “If you are concerned about someone you see sleeping outside, please visit the StreetLink website so that we can take action to help – https://thestreetlink.org.uk/”

The amber weather warning has been put in place from 12pm on Thursday, January 2 until 12pm on Wednesday, January 8.
