Ben Williamson, 23, a former Queen Anne High School pupil, was hurt in the incident which took place over the weekend of December 28-29.
Hamilton Academical, for whom he plays, released a statement following the accident, in which they said they were “immensely saddened by the news of the injuries sustained by our player Ben Williamson in a road traffic accident”.
They added: “At this time, we cannot comment on the circumstances of the accident, but we shall support Ben appropriately and he has our best wishes for a speedy recovery.
“Our thoughts are very much with him at this difficult time.”
The Lanarkshire outfit’s manager, John Rankin, spoke to his club’s social media channels in the build-up to their match at Greenock Morton on Saturday, which was postponed, and provided an update on Mr Williamson.
“Ben will be out of hospital the early part of next week hopefully,” he said in a video released on Saturday (January 4).
“As I said, it’s unfortunate circumstances. I’m glad that Ben’s ok. I’ve spoken to him, he’s feeling much more positive than he was the early part of the week, but what’s important is he realises that, not just the players and staff are behind him, that also the supporters are behind him as well.
“We need to be ready for the challenge they bring, there’s not been a lot between the teams this season and I expect a really close game again.” 🗣️

“It’s unfortunate circumstances but we’re right behind him, and we’re making sure that we’re with him every step of the way in his recovery, and hopefully it’s not too long until we’re back seeing Ben Williamson in the building.”
A native of Blairhall, where he attended primary school, the midfielder is a product of the Rangers youth system.
Whilst at Ibrox, Williamson had loan spells with Arbroath, Livingston, Raith Rovers, Dundee and Partick Thistle, before joining Accies on an 18-month deal last January.
This season, he has played 15 times in all competitions for Hamilton, the most recent of which was during a 2-1 win over Queen’s Park on December 14.
