Hadrian’s Wall: Dog walker fell in deep snow into bog

The Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team (NNPMRT) and the North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team (NOTMRT) were alerted to a walker in distress at Kings Hill, Hadrian’s Wall, near Housesteads Roman Fort on January 8 at 2.12pm.

A Facebook post by NNPMRT said: “The walker had fallen through the snow into a bog and they were wet and extremely cold.”

Rescue teams were activated once the walker contacted police.

“Given the prevailing low temperatures and snow covered moors, along with the walker’s condition, there was a level of urgency to the response. While volunteer members close to the incident and a 4×4 vehicle were mobilised, our duty controller confirmed the walker’s location with Sarloc Rescue technology. They then proceeded to talk the walker down off the hill, while providing plenty of reassurance that they were making good progress and that members would be with her shortly.

“Within 30 minutes the walker was down on the Military Road being assessed by one of our remote rescue medical technicians. After being rewarmed, the very grateful and relieved walker was discharged from our care to make her own way home. The walker did exactly the right thing by calling for help before the situation became worse.”

The incident involved seven team members for less than two hours. A further 15 members were on standby in case it escalated.

This was the third incident the mountain rescue teams have responded to this year.

If you get lost or injured in the hills, moors or forests, dial ask for the police and request mountain rescue.
