Gusford Primary School in Ipswich celebrates ‘historic’ Ofsted results after ‘rapid improvement’

A primary school in Ipswich has had a fantastic start to the new year by securing its highest ever Ofsted score.

Gusford Primary School, in Sheldrake Drive, Chantry, was handed four good and one outstanding rating after a November inspection.

Prior to the removal of one word judgements, this would have equated to an overall good rating, having only ever been given requires improvements grades in previous inspections.

Stephen Tapley, who was appointed headteacher after Gusford’s last inspection in September 2022, said everyone was extremely proud to share the result of the report.

He described it as a ‘historic moment’ and ‘hugely significant achievement’ for the whole school.

Mr Tapley added: “I want to thank all our pupils, staff, parents and governors for their support which has played such an important part in this achievement.

“We look forward to continuing to work together so that Gusford continues to develop and prosper.”

Neil Taggart, Ofsted’s lead inspector, said pupils enjoyed attending Gusford Primary School and engaged well with learning.

Reviewers noted the school’s high expectations for students, which were often achieved, and that pupils felt safe and supported, with issues such as bullying dealt with promptly and fairly.

He said the school was rapidly improving, with its emphasis on reading and personal development as the school’s strengths.

In addition, its provision for pupils with special education needs and disabilities (SEND), as well as early years, were praised.

However, Mr Taggart said the school’s checks on ensuring curriculum was implemented effectively were still in their early stages and could do better in ensuring its reading curriculum was richer and more varied.

Gusford Primary School is part of Active Learning Trust.

Lynsey Holzer, chief executive of Active Learning Trust, congratulated everyone at the school for their excellent achievement.

She added: “We are so pleased that this report reflects the nurturing and positive culture at Gusford and the rapid improvements the school has made in recent years.

“We look forward to continuing to support Gusford to progress together with the whole school community.”
