Grappenhall St Wilfrid’s CofE Primary School highly praised by Ofsted

Grappenhall St Wilfrid’s CofE Primary School was previously graded outstanding in three areas of its last full inspection in 2019, with the other areas achieving a grading of good.

In a follow up inspection carried out in September of last year, inspectors stated the school ‘has taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection’.

In another praising inspection for the Church Lane school, the official report began: “The school’s high expectations shine through all aspects of its work.

“Pupils meet these expectations well, whether this is through their positive behaviour or their hard work. Pupils learn and achieve well, including pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).”

During the visit, inspectors observed the pupils who attend the setting to be “kind and have a deep appreciation of diversity and equality”. They added that the children clearly “value their education” which is reflected in the above average attendance rates.

Some of the positives of the school highlighted within the report included the quality of education which was noted as an improvement since the previous inspection.

As well as improvements made to the curriculum and an “consistent approach to teaching” by the staff.

“The school provides guidance and training for staff. This has resulted in a consistent approach to teaching. Teachers explain new knowledge clearly, giving pupils time to think and rehearse their answers”

Pupils with SEND who need additional support are identified within the early years at the school and work is adapted appropriately to ensure they can ‘learn the same ambitious curriculum as their peers’, inspectors noted.

Staff were also praised for having ‘high expectations’ of pupils’ behaviour and attendance.

“Pupils are enthusiastic to learn and behave sensibly in class. In the early years, children enjoy learning about the world creatively through play, inside and outside of the classroom. Throughout school, pupils listen intently, debate and build on others’ thoughts.”

And the school’s values “sit at the heart of its work” to prioritise broader development among the children.

An inspector added: “Following a suggestion from an inspired pupil, the ‘busy bee’ group have introduced a bee colony.

“Pupils are proud of their honey and look forward to selling it soon at the Christmas Fair.

“Pupils had their eyes opened to the possible future careers that they could consider. They developed a better understanding of why they need to work hard and overcome challenges in life.”
