Friends of the Family Winchester looking for volunteers

The initiative is part of a service provided by Friends of the Family, a charity that helps families in need.

The charity pairs trained volunteers with children aged five to 13 who need support, with the volunteers committing to spend two hours a week with them for one year.

This simple gift of friendship has the potential to transform young lives and also brings a sense of purpose and community to the volunteers.

Sharon, a volunteer, is at the start of her befriending journey with 11-year-old Rosie.

Rosie’s mum suffers from mental health issues, and her little brother is autistic, leading her dad to stop working to care for them.

As a result, Rosie has become increasingly anxious and reluctant to leave the house.

Sharon is already seeing positive results. She said: “We have quickly built a good friendship and a genuine respect for each other.

“Rosie is in Year 6 and is approaching the transition from primary to secondary school. I hope I can help her to grow in confidence as she approaches this milestone.”

The befriending service aims to let children be children.

Rosie said: “Me and Sharon have already done some fun things like arts and crafts, but we have decided that we are both going to learn something new together, so we are going to learn how to crochet at the same time.”

The charity supported 31 children like Rosie last year, and the benefits extend beyond the children.

Befriending manager Sam Hunt said: “The gift of friendship goes both ways.

“Many of our volunteers comment on the happiness it brings to their lives too.”

However, the charity is concerned about 2025 due to the increasing number of children being referred to them.

Sam said: “With so many children being referred to us, we really need more volunteers to sign up for the next training programme being held in Winchester on March 6 and March 8.

“We are very worried that children who desperately need help will miss out.

“You don’t need any special skills or qualifications, all you need is empathy, kindness and a willingness to help. You can do it.”
