Torrential rainfall around the turn of the New Year last week saw the banks of the waterway give way, around Dunham Massey and Little Bollington.
The canal towpath is a popular walking route, while others have been visiting the canal to take pictures of the damage.
Now, Cheshire East Council has put in place a series of closures following safety concerns along the canal.
A council spokesman said: “As we continue to work with partner agencies following the damage to the Bridgewater Canal last week, a number of public footpaths in the surrounding area have now been closed.

“This is for health and safety reasons and to protect members of the public while the recovery operation continues.
“Notices have been put up in the areas where the closures are. There are a number of routes that lead into each other, and the towpath also remains closed.
“The closures will initially be for 21 days, but this will be kept under review.
“We continue to ask people to avoid the area and to observe the various closures that are in place.
“Please do not attempt to remove any cordons or barriers. This is for your own safety and for the safety of others. Thank you for your patience.”
