Flood barriers up in Bewdley as river levels remain high

Photos have captured the extent of the River Severn levels with the flood barriers being deployed to protect homes and businesses in the area.

A flood alert was previously issued for the River Severn in Worcestershire with the Environment Agency confirming that flooding on roads and farmland is possible.

Although the road is currently clear, flood barriers are unable to be deployed on Beales Corner due to ongoing work to install permanent flood defences.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: “River levels are forecast to rise at the Bewdley river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall. Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible.

“We expect flooding to affect low lying land and roads adjacent to the river from Highley to Tewkesbury.

“Locations affected are Stourport, Holt Fleet, Worcester, Kempsey, Severn Stoke, Upton upon Severn, South Quay, Diglis Parade and Hylton Road towpath. Flooded drains may affect the racecourse and Worcester County cricket ground.”

Flooding has hit parts of the county over the last few days following the snow and heavy rain over the weekend.

Some cars have been left stranded in water with the emergency services urging people not to drive through flood water.

The river in Bewdley is expected to peak at between 3.7m and 3.8m but has currently reached more than 3.6m.

No further rainfall is expected today and the water levels appear to be falling with the Environment Agency confirming that they are “monitoring the situation closely”.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency added: “No further significant rainfall is expected today.

“We expect river levels to remain high over the next few days. We are closely monitoring the situation.”
