Flood alert issued for River Sankey as snow turns to rain

The Met Office had issued a snow and ice warning for the North West this weekend which was in force between 6pm Saturday and midday Sunday.

Snow did indeed come overnight and this morning, blanketing the town.

But as the afternoon has worn on, the weather has become very wet with the Environment Agency (EA) now issuing a flood alert for the River Sankey catchment area.

An EA spokesman said: “River levels are rising due to rainfall.

“Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the River Sankey, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around low lying land and roads around Black, Barkers, Windle and Whittle Brooks and their tributaries.

“More rainfall is forecast throughout Monday, January 6.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and are monitoring rainfall and river levels.

“Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.”

The Sankey catchment area includes Black, Barkers, Windle and Whittle Brooks and their tributaries.

Other locations which may be affected are around Rainford, Billinge, Prescot, Newton-le-Willows, Haydock, Ashton-in-Makerfield and Golbourne.
