Fire crews leave site of large Burtonwood industrial fire 10 days on

It was previously reported that a fire had started in an industrial unit on Phipps Lane in Burtonwood, at around 11am on December 28.

Around five fire engines attended, with firefighters fighting the fire by splitting the incident into sections and an aerial ladder platform applying water from above.

Crews also gained access to the interior of the premises to tackle the fire, before checking for hotspots using a thermal imaging camera once the fire was out to prevent it from spreading.

However, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service was called back to the industrial estate that same evening, at around 9.15pm.

Fire engines from Lymm, Birchwood, Macclesfield and Nantwich fire stations attended, assisted by crews from Merseyside and Greater Manchester fire and rescue services.

The ‘well-developed’ fire saw crews remain overnight, with a firefighter presence visible at the scene for 10 further days.

This is despite a huge demand for fire and rescue services due to a number of flooding incidents across Warrington and further afield.

The reason why there was a presence for so long after ignition has been confirmed by the fire service.

A spokesman said: “Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has had a prolonged attendance at an industrial premises on Phipps Lane, following a fire where the building partially collapsed.

“This meant that it was a complex fire to fully extinguish, and crews have been taking shifts to monitor the site.

“Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to carry out regular checks and dampen down where necessary.

“The fire is now fully extinguished, and our crew left the incident on January 7.”
